It is possible to speak to a NYC dermatologist before committing to care

Each year millions of cosmetic procedures are performed on thousands of women and men in the NYC area. Taking charge of appearance can be an empowering and rewarding experience. It represents an investment in self worth and confidence. It is also a big decision, with plenty of options. I recommend a three step approach to get the best return on your investment.

Step 1 – Decide between an aesthetician and a dermatologist.

Today it’s easy to find aesthetic treatment at mall kiosks, day spas, and salons, but the qualifications of the person treating you matter a great deal. Complications can occur despite the credentials and experience of any physician or aesthetician, but it is important prior to having a procedure, that a Board-certified dermatologist evaluate your skin’s condition and create a treatment plan. This may involve laser devices, fillers, and Botox® Cosmetic, along with involvement of an aesthetician for facial care.

The most critical difference between an aesthetician and a dermatologist is training. A dermatologist has attended college and medical school, and completed a medical residency. Following these 12 to 14 years of formal education and clinical training, the dermatologist is considered an expert in care of skin, hair, and nails, qualified in medical and cosmetic treatments.

While state requirements vary, an aesthetician typically completes up to two years of training focused on cosmetic skin care, facials, and noninvasive procedures. An aesthetician is not qualified to identify or diagnose medical issues with skin, hair, or nails.

The safest and most effective treatment is designed and administered by a board certified Dermatologist whose sub-specialties include cosmetic dermatology and dermatologic surgery.

Step 2 – Set up a stress free consultation.

You should not feel pressured to schedule treatment without a consultation. I prefer to conduct an unhurried, stress free consultation as a separate appointment, prior to any commitment to receiving care. This is an opportunity to talk about concerns you have with the condition of your skin. It gives me the chance to delve into pertinent aspects of your current and hereditary medical situation, and to understand your lifestyle. I answer questions, use educational visual aids, and show real before and after photos.

I feel that this step in treatment planning is vital. So important that I offer free consultation for patients who call this number – 212-561-5808, ask for me by name, mention this blog, and schedule treatment with me. Free consultation valid till December 15, 2014.

Step 3 – Take part in creating a transformation plan.

It’s an exciting time to be a dermatologist. Never before have we had so many options to offer patients seeking skin rejuvenation and body sculpting. I’m thrilled to discuss innovative minimally-invasive or noninvasive technique such as Cool Sculpting®, ThermiRF™ (ThermiTight™ and ThermiSmooth™) , Ultherapy®, Pellevé®, Fraxel® laser therapies, Portrait® Plasma, Botox® Cosmetic and dermal fillers (Juvéderm®, Voluma™, and Belotero®). However, ultimately treatment must be right for your face, your body, your health, your schedule, and your budget. It is essential that you take an active role in the design of your treatment plan.

What results can NYC patients expect from Ultherapy® facial treatment?

By now you might have heard of Ultherapy®. Or maybe you’ve seen the amazing results of on a friend or coworker and wondered what she’d done to look so refreshed. Let’s talk about those results and how they are achieved with this FDA-cleared method of lifting and tightening skin without surgery.

Ultherapy® gives skin, from brow to chest, a natural lift from the inside. It uses the same technology as medical ultrasound, delivered in a safe, controlled manner, more focused than diagnostic ultrasound devices employ, to boost collagen production in deep skin layers. Treatment is especially precise and safe because it incorporates imaging, which allows me to see into tissue layers, applying ultrasound where it will be most beneficial.

Treatment is very effective. It does not duplicate the results of a facelift, but it can postpone the need for surgery indefinitely. Here is the transformation you can expect, usually with just one Ultherapy® session:

  • Treatment for face and neck takes about an hour to 90 minutes. The FDA recently cleared Ultherapy® for treatment of skin on décolletage, also. That takes approximately 30 additional minutes.
  • Each patient’s comfort level is different during treatment, but typically Ultherapy® is well tolerated. You feel the ultrasound sensation only when energy is being delivered, not for the whole duration of your appointment, and not after Ultherapy® is completed. Immediately after treatment you feel ready to go back to your normal routine. Often, patients comment that for a few weeks those regions are slightly tender to the touch. This is a normal effect of the desired inflammatory reaction taking place in the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissues and the supporting structure referred to as fascia.
  • There’s no downtime, and no special post-procedure care is required. Simply return to your usual activities.
  • Your complexion may appear flushed for a few hours. Some patients experience minor swelling, bruising, tenderness, or numbness, and rarely weakness in regional areas, but it is temporary.
  • Many people see immediate improvement. The real magic happens, though, over the next two to three months as your body steps up collagen production, to lift and tighten skin in treated areas.
  • Results are long lasting. However, skin will eventually sag again over time. Touch up treatment is just a call away.

Ultrasound technology has been used in medicine for half a century, and more than 350,000 Ultherapy® procedures have been performed globally. Treatment is safe and results are proven.

Facial treatment for a more youthful look doesn’t have to mean anesthetic, cutting, stitches, and a long recovery period. Call 212-561-5808 and ask for Dr. Ron Shelton. Mention this blog and I’ll be happy to schedule a consultation to answer your questions about Ultherapy®.
