The U.S. News and World Report’s doctor finder service lists 1,197 dermatologists in New York City. The majority of those doctors offer a variety of non-surgical, minimally invasive devices and techniques for face and body rejuvenation. While treatment choice is ultimately the patients’, it is natural for them to rely on advice from the dermatologist on how to proceed. I find myself recommending ThermiRF ™ with increasing frequency. Here is more information for patients who want to know why.
What is ThermiRF ™ ?
This is a versatile FDA-cleared device that uses radiofrequency (RF) technology to generate heat in deep layers of skin without harm to the surface. We apply the focused RF to induce metabolic changes that tighten skin, improve body contours, and soften wrinkles.
How is it used?
The ThermiRF ™system is a console with a hand piece and several application tips.
ThermiRase relaxes frown lines and tightens skin on the forehead, between the eyebrows. A micro-invasive tip delivers RF energy. It causes an interruption of impulses from nerves that tell muscles to contract. That softens the appearance of wrinkles in much the same way as Botox® Cosmetic, without the use of drugs.
ThermiTight can help lift the sagging lower face, including smile folds, jowls, jaw line, corners of the mouth, and the neck.
For fat reduction and body contouring, a very small probe is passed through the skin into the fatty tissue layer. The probe sends a controlled dose of RF energy to melt targeted fat cells, which are then flushed harmlessly from the body over the next few months.
What makes ThermiRF ™ different?
ThermiRF ™ is an “in between procedure” – in between non-invasive treatments such as Ultherapy®, Pellevé®, and Thermage®, and surgically invasive procedures like face or neck lift. The difference lies in the technology and the results. It is the only temperature controlled aesthetic therapy that penetrates to subdermal layers, with a thermal camera to monitor surface temperature and an internal probe that records actual temperature achieved by the tissues that the physician intends to tighten. That allows deep heat for maximum collagen remodeling and fat reduction, without the limitation of temperature tolerance of surface skin. The difference is a high safety profile, precise application with effective outcomes.
I have answers. There are all kinds of products, gadgets, and services that make rejuvenation claims, but now and then a solution comes along that is truly exciting in its effectiveness and ease of use. ThermiRF is one of those breakthrough treatments.
Since this is new technology, let’s look at some of the questions patients in New York have been asking about ThermiRF.
What is ThermiRF?
ThermiRF is a family of compact devices that deliver a therapeutic dose of electrical and radiofrequency energy through a hand piece. It is non-surgical, and depending on the application, a non-invasive or micro-invasive technique.
What does it do?
For wrinkle reduction, ThermiRF relaxes muscles in a way similar to Botox or Dysport, but without injected medications. It tightens tissues by stimulating collagen synthesis. With the use of a tiny cannula, ThermiRF can melt fat in very specific areas. I use it for long-term reduction of frown lines, wrinkle treatment, skin tightening, to provide lift, and to improve contours.
Where can it be used?
ThermiRF is ideal for small areas and those that are difficult to treat with conventional procedures:
- Forehead frown lines
- Under the chin
- Love handles
Is it safe?
ThermiRF is very safe. It is cleared by the FDA, and the device is the first of its kind with exclusive temperature control technology. This feature eliminates thermal spikes, helping to ensure patient comfort and reliable outcomes. The controls and monitoring system are built-in, and I and my staff have special training in administering ThermiRF treatment. Only local anesthetic is needed, if any. Treatment time is brief, and there is no downtime. My patients return to their regular activities right after an appointment.
ThermiRF is effective, convenient, and results are long lasting. It’s how New York is looking great without surgery.
. . . and chins and necks, without surgery and with zero downtime. If you like the sound of that, you’ll love FDA-cleared Ultherapy.
Aesthetic medicine is an exciting field that is constantly evolving. I really enjoy bringing the latest techniques to patients at The New York Aesthetic Consultants, including Ultherapy. This procedure uses ultrasound technology to stimulate the body’s own natural healing processes. It lifts and tightens sagging skin in hard to treat areas – under the chin, on the brow, and around the neck.
Safe ultrasound energy has been used in medicine for more than 50 years. You are probably most familiar with it as first image parents see of their new baby. Ultherapy basically uses the same acoustic science to rev up the production of collagen and elastin in your skin, although the energy is more focused than diagnostic ultrasound.
We perform the hour to hour and a half sessions right in our office. You relax while we smooth ultrasound gel over treatment areas. Then a smooth hand piece delivers a controlled dose of ultrasound energy at a precise depth, bypassing the skin’s surface. Treatment is generally well tolerated, but we may recommend an over the counter analgesic or prescription medication if your skin is thin and very sensitive.
That’s it. There’s no downtime and no special care required after treatment. You’ll probably see a boost in the condition of your skin immediately, but the real magic happens gradually. Over the next two to three months skin on the brow, jaw line, under the chin, and on the neck lifts and tightens noticeably. (I like to compare it to the results you get by gradually building muscle tone in the gym.) As your skin becomes more firm, droops and sags resolve, and the appearance of wrinkles diminishes.
In a surgical facelift, underlying muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed. There isn’t a non-invasive treatment that can fully duplicate those results. However, Ultherapy, especially as part of a full facial rejuvenation program, can be a great interim method to postpone the need for facelift indefinitely. I recommend it in combination with neuromodulators, dermal fillers, and laser therapy for a fresh, youthful complexion.
Dermal fillers have been around since about 1900. These compounds, which are injected beneath the skin to add youthful volume and soften the appearance of wrinkles, are constantly evolving – becoming more effective and even safer.
One of the newest kids on the non-invasive rejuvenation block is Belotero Balance, brought to us by Merz Aesthetics. The FDA approved this transparent hyaluronic acid formulation in November 2011. It improves the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles and folds, especially those around the nose and mouth.
What makes Belotero different? And why are women and men in NYC so anxious to give it a try? Let’s take a look:
- Belotero integrates into your unique facial contours, enhancing individuality for a very natural look.
- It is versatile. This one product is delicate enough to treat fine vertical lip lines, and sufficiently robust for deep nasolabial folds (the smile lines that form around your mouth).
- The hyaluronic acid (HA) in Belotero is a natural part of your skin’s composition. After injection, HA binds with water to plump and smooth wrinkles even more.
- There’s no waiting – results are instant and last about six month; longer for some patients.
- Belotero is convenient. Treatment sessions are brief (usually an hour or less), and are performed right in our office.
- There is zero downtime! You may return to work or other activities right away. Some patients experience a little redness or minor bruising at injections sites, but it is quite temporary and easily concealed with makeup.
I am very pleased to bring Belotero to NYC, because I believe in its effectiveness and safety – otherwise I wouldn’t offer it to patients of The New York Aesthetic Consultants. I find that Belotero works well alone, and in combination with Botox and fillers. When I design an individualized non-surgical facial rejuvenation program for a patient, I use Belotero Balance to complement techniques such as Fraxel and Portrait Plasma, and advanced skin tightening methodologies such as Pellevé, Ultherapy, and Thermage.
The new Fraxel Dual™ treatment makes use of a laser to address a wide range of aesthetic problems. This treatment has been noted to produce far better results when compared to other similar treatments in just a couple of sessions. Furthermore, one noteworthy fact about this treatment is that is causes much less discomfort to the patient than carbon dioxide laser treatment!
Fraxel™ is a safe and mild alternative for people who do not want to undergo the conventional laser resurfacing. This treatment can effectively improve a wide range of aesthetic skin problems. These skin problems include aging skin, acne scars, enlarged pores, age spots, birthmarks, sun damage, and fin lines.
When compared to a dermabrasion treatment, which leads to all the skin being removed with a wire brush or a diamond wheel; Fraxel™ makes use of a laser that emits a narrow light beam that targets and improves problem areas that are microscopic The healthy cells that are found around this area will remain untouched. This way, the patient feels less pain or discomfort and it leads to faster healing as there are healthy cell left behind to make the quicken the healing process. The production of collagen will be increased, leading to the skin becoming tightened. Pigmentation will be normalized.
Fraxel™ is a slow and ongoing skin treatment. Because the process is gradual, it makes sure that the health and safety of the patient’s skin will be optimally maintained. With this laser treatment, patients are not bound to a period of recovery unlike most other treatments; they can get back to their daily schedule the following day, or even on the same day as the treatment itself. The only side-effects, if they can be called as such, are minor redness and inflammation in the treated area, which will disappear after a short while.
