Acne scars: What’s the best treatment?

The most frustrating thing about acne is that even when it’s gone, the scars still remain. Some patients suffer from severe acne scars while others are fortunate to have blemishes that come and go without leaving any marks. If you’re a part of the first category, then laser treatment might be the best option for you. Although it doesn’t completely remove a scar, it does, however, reduce the appearance of acne scars.
Dr. Ron Shelton explains about several treatments which have been successful in reducing the appearance of acne scars.

Fraxel Laser

Fraxel laser is an FDA-approved treatment for acne scars. Widely praised for its ability to treat most scar types and nearly all skin types, Fraxel laser is a non-ablative fractional erbium and thulium laser treatment. During each treatment, only a percentage of skin is used without disturbing the healthy skin area. This laser sends microscopic laser energy which creates micro wounds in the acne scars area. As the skin heals around these micro wounds, it starts producing collagen and new, healthy skin replaces the acne scars.

RF Microneedling

This is a new procedure that combines traditional Microneedling with radiofrequency energy. It has become a popular treatment for acne scars. RF Microneedling uses small needles to deliver Radio Frequency energy into the deep layers of the skin. This stimulates cell regeneration and collagen production.

Fractional CO2 Laser

Fractional carbon dioxide lasers are a more aggressive but safer treatment for acne scars than the former fully ablative carbon dioxide lasers. This state-of-the-art technology treats the affected areas more gently and safely than the former lasers, minimizing possible side effects while speeding up the healing process. During this treatment, the CO2 laser pokes microscopic holes in the deep layers of the skin, inducing the production of new collagen to smooth out the scars.

Halo and Profractional Laser

This is another popular procedure at Dr Ron Shelton’s practice for treating both deep and superficial acne scars. The non-ablative Halo laser treatment is a minimally-invasive procedure which produces long-term results. During the treatment, most patients may feel a slightly warm sensation on their skin, which will persist for several hours afterward. A topical numbing cream is, however, applied for extra-sensitive skin.

Patients will see the scars fading over the course of several weeks. However, optimal results may be seen after 3 to 6 weeks when the skin cells are renewed due to the production of new collagen. The Profractional laser does induce more downtime and is more effective for moderate scarring.

Subcision

Subcision is a safe and simple procedure for treatment of depressed acne scars. A dermatologist inserts a hypodermic needle beneath your scar. This needle is used to loosen and break the fibers that connect the scar to the tissue underneath it. This process not only helps to lift a depressed scar, but also triggers the release of collagen at the site of the needle insertion. The lifting of the scar and the release of collagen can help diminish the appearance of the scar.

Punch Graft

One of the most effective methods for treating severe acne scarring is punch excision. This procedure involves the doctor using a small instrument to punch a hole in the skin, remove the scar and replace it with a plug of new skin. After punch grafts, many patients choose to undergo laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels or filler injections to improve the overall appearance of the treated area.

Your skin may be suffering from the aftermath of pandemic stress, and some of Dr. Shelton’s patients have said, “I feel like I’ve aged years during the last year.” If you take a look at their faces, you will see that the pandemic has actually taken a physical toll on their appearances.
